How does implementing differentiated literacy instructional techniques enhance student learning?

Abstract: 
I explored how differentiated literacy instructional techniques enhance student learning. Since becoming a teacher, I have constantly struggled with how to meet the literacy needs of my learners. Through my experience in the classroom, I have seen time and time again students lose interest in reading because their learning is designed in a very structured and “one size fits all” format. I have witnessed my students become discouraged and feel they will never be successful readers or writers because they are not learning in a way that is helpful to them. Struggling with this conundrum, I began searching for a way to help my students achieve these many milestones, but in a way that allows them to take ownership of their learning and feel confident in their skills and abilities as readers and writers. Throughout this program, I not only learned how to engage my reluctant readers, but I also learned how to differentiate my literacy instruction to help my students reach their full potential. I was able to witness firsthand the benefits of differentiated instruction with the students in my class and the students I had the privilege to tutor throughout this program. I saw the excitement and motivation these students showed toward reading simply because they were being instructed in a way that helped them reach and understand the concepts and curriculum. With the use of digital tools and various project-based learning opportunities, I witnessed growth and excitement among my learners again. I also learned the importance of differentiating instruction not just for the students we teach, but also the adults we interact with. My findings clearly show the benefits of differentiated literacy instruction, but the most important factor is understanding the students you teach and taking the time to plan meaningful instruction that will reach them on their level, and help them foster a love of reading for years to come.
